BREAST ENLARGEMENT
Operation: This procedure is used to enlarge
the size of breasts using inflatable implants filled with
saline.
Operation Time (estimate): Total operating
time is 1 to 2 hours.
Anesthesia/Pain Control: Two forms of anesthesia
that can be used are local with sedation or general.
Location: This is usually an outpatient
procedure.
Side effects (Possible): Possible side
effects include temporary soreness, swelling, change in
nipple sensation, bruising, increased sensitivity of breasts
to stimulation for a few weeks.
Complications (Possible): Possible complications
of this procedure include lack of implant permanence, deflation,
bleeding, infection, and formation of scar tissue around
the implant (this is called capsular contracture and causes
the breast to feel tight and hard). Some patients may also
experience increased or decreased sensitivity of nipples
or breast skin which is occasionally permanent. Mammography
requires a special technique.
Downtime: Patients can go back to work
in a few days. Physical contact with breasts can resume
3 to 4 weeks after surgery. It will take several months
to a year for scars to fade.
Duration of Results: Duration of results
varies per person. Some patients may require implant removal
or replacement.
