In cosmetic surgery, every patient is different. Every patient recovers and heals differently. One key factor is as long as a patient follows post-surgery or after surgery instructions, it’s rare to have complications from cosmetic procedures. Patients are encouraged to share and disclose ALL of their medical history so that a proper individualized cosmetic surgery care plan can be created. A few Patients with certain medical conditions might not qualify for cosmetic procedures.
What will remain steadfast in the realm of cosmetic surgery is that it is the skill and artistry of the Cosmetic surgeon that determines a successful outcome. Cosmetic Surgery is a surgical art. Dr. Araya, a cosmetic surgeon, has done more cosmetic surgeries and procedures in Washington dc area than most physicians. Likewise, sound medical decisions, based on years of study and practice, are made by the cosmetic surgeon, and other cosmetic surgical team members. These are central to your safety while undergoing a cosmetic procedure.
Dr. Araya makes critical decisions that will never be overshadowed by technology of any kind. The curves and shapes, the amount of fat to extract or skin to remove, the evenness with which it is removed and the blending of one area into another are all artistic judgment calls on the part of the cosmetic surgeon. In his 20 years of surgical research, Dr. Araya is one of the few to recognize the potential reaction or a delayed hypersensitive reaction to surgical stainless steel equipment. His research has shown how to eliminate and reduce the delayed reaction. In his research, Dr. Araya has devised local anesthesia to take a better effect than previously expected. To eliminate and reduce post-surgery swelling, Dr. Araya’s research has shown that certain medications reduce swelling significantly. Ultimately, excellent outcome depends on an excellent and cooperative patient.
Plastic surgeon or Cosmetic Surgeon? There is a public misconception about plastic surgeons. Plastic surgeons are mainly trained to do breast cancer reconstruction surgery NOT liposuction or cosmetic surgery. This is contrary to what everyone believes that plastic surgeons are cosmetic surgeons which is a myth rather than a fact. Plastic surgery training on average is 2-3 years of reconstructive surgeries and NOT cosmetic surgery. Dr. Araya with his 15+ years of surgical experience and over 20 years of cosmetic surgery research does not practice plastic surgery.

The Surgery FAQ
Because we specialize in under-local anesthesia and mild oral sedation, we have the highest safety margins in liposuction surgery and you can return to work in a day or two depending on the areas of surgery (no worries about general anesthesia and not waking up).
ALL of our liposuction patients in the before and after pictures were done under-local anesthesia with minimal sedation which maximizes curves and shapes and minimizes post liposuction pain, swelling and complications due to general anesthesia.
Liposuction surgical Operation: tumescent liposuction and liposculpting improves body shape by removing exercise-resistant fat deposits with a tube and vacuum device. Liposuction can be performed using the tumescent technique in which targeted fat cells are infused with saline solution (which contains a local anesthetic) before liposuction to reduce post-operative bruising and swelling. Common locations for liposuction include chin, cheeks, neck, upper arms, above breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. For larger volumes of fat or for fibrous body areas, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) may be used. UAL is a new technique in which an ultrasound probe is inserted beneath the skin to "liquefy" the fat before it is suctioned. UAL is rarely used.
Liposuction surgical Time (estimate): Surgery is performed in our Washington dc location and surgical duration or time varies from 1-2 hours or more depending on the type of liposuction performed. Liposculpting takes 2-4 hours.
Liposuction Anesthesia/Pain Control: Liposuction procedure is normally performed under local anesthesia but depending on the type of liposuction it can also be performed under general or epidural. We prefer local sedation to maximize best curves and shapes. General anesthesia has a high risk of death and we do not use it in our office.
Liposuction surgical Location: It is usually an outpatient procedure in our Washington dc surgical clinic but extensive operations may require short inpatient stay which is very rare.
Liposuction surgical Side effects (Possible): Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, or burning sensation may occur. If the tumescent technique is used there may be temporary fluid drainage from the incision sites.
Liposuction Complications (Possible): Patients must keep in mind that everyone is different and everyone heals differently. The most common complications seen are from patients that refuse to follow post up instructions. Heating pad application is prohibited because the skin is numb and patients cannot feel the heat and can burn themselves. Patients that would apply heating pads will see their skin will completely burn. Patients cannot take a bath after surgery (limited showers are ok). Some patients who take a bath will end up with infections. Even though we provide 10 days worth of antibiotics, patients are encouraged to stay off bathing until cleared. Patients that insist to sleep on the areas that were operated on can end up with ulcers and sever scars. Extremely tight girdles (waist trainers) can cause skin necrosis/skin death. The key to prevent complication is to follow instructions.
Other possible liposuction complications that can occur are asymmetry, rippling or bagginess of skin, pigmentation changes, skin injuries, fluid retention, and excessive fluid loss leading to shock. Seromas a term used for swelling are common and might need to be drained. Seromas and swelling can be improved by reducing or eliminating salts and sugars.
Liposuction Downtime: Patients can go back to work in 1 to 2 days. A patient may participate in more strenuous activities in 1 to 2 weeks. The use of the tumescent technique may decrease post-operative bruising and swelling. We can provide a medical note to your employer and you can take time off from work. The note does not mention the type of surgery a patient had and employers cannot request what kind of surgery an employee had.
Duration of liposuction Results: Results are permanent with sensible diet and exercise.
